WORCESTER- Elle “Ellie” (Sotiriou) Efstathiou, 78, of Worcester died Sunday, November 18 in UMASS Memorial Hospital-Memorial Campus, after a long illness. She was a strong and courageous woman who worried more about her family and friends, and was always there to help out.
She leaves her son Spiro J. Efstathiou, who took care of her and with whom she also lived. She also leaves her sister, Vasiliki “Bessie” Kokkinos of Worcester and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Her loving husband, John S. Efstathiou died March 18, 2001. Her brother Peter N. Sotiriou died May 9, 2006, and his wife Loula Sotiriou died January 31, 2006. Ellie was born in Finiki Epirus Greece, daughter of Nicholas and Anna (Filliou) Sotiriou, and came to Worcester in 1948.
Ellie worked at Notis Pizza on Highland Street and also worked at Mana’s Pizza which is located on Pleasant Street. She was a member of St. Spyridon’s Greek Orthodox Cathedral, and was actively involved with Grecian Festivals, her specialty was the pastry area.
The funeral will be Wednesday, November 21 from CALLAHAN & FAY BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 61 Myrtle St, with a service at 12 p.m. Noon in St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 102 Russell Street. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery. Calling hours with a Trisagion service are 5-8 p.m. on Tuesday, November 20 in the funeral home.

This award was originally established for third and fourth year medical students at UMASS Medical School, for caring and compassionate needs of patients and the family members, during difficult situations.
