WORCESTER–Martha Louise (O'Hagan) O'Sullivan, a longtime school teacher, died Wednesday, November 14th, at Tatnuck Park. Her husband, Thomas V. O’Sullivan, Sr. died in 1969. She leaves three daughters, Dr. Kathleen wife of Dr. Colin Mailer of Victoria, British Columbia, Eileen Stewart and her spouse Sarah Scott of Williamsburg, MA and Margaret O'Sullivan and her husband Dan Carney of Beaufort, S.C; four sons, Dr. Thomas V. O’Sullivan, Jr. of Louisville, KY, John M. and his wife, Mary (Cahill) O’Sullivan of Cambridge and Kevin and his wife, Linda (Turco) O'Sullivan and Michael and his wife, Mary (Moylan) O’Sullivan all of Worcester; five grandchildren, several nephews and two nieces. Her daughter, Maureen, died in 1997, an infant son, Terrence, died in 1944. Her sister, Mary Barbara McCurdy, died in 2005.
Mrs. O'Sullivan was born October 27, 1912, in Boston the daughter of John and Martha (McGrath) O'Hagan and attended Notre Dame Academy in the Fenway and Boston University, where she was president of her senior class. She received her master’s degree in education from Worcester State College. Mrs. O'Sullivan was the typing teacher for many years at the former Providence Street Junior High School in Worcester, retiring in 1980. She began her teaching career in Hardwick, MA and later taught in Simsbury, CT. After marrying, she and her family lived in Boston, Columbus, OH, Chappaqua, NY and Norwalk, CT before settling in Worcester in 1958. After her retirement, Mrs. O'Sullivan volunteered for many years at Memorial Hospital. A devout Catholic, Mrs. O'Sullivan was a member of Blessed Sacrament parish in Worcester, where she attended Mass daily and once served on the Parish Council. In Worcester, she joined and later served as president of the Worcester Children’s Players; and was a member and past president of the Neried Swim Club at the YWCA. As a teacher, Mrs. O’Sullivan regularly put on student and teacher plays, and once managed a joint production in which her students performed and toured with the Boston Opera Company. She was a great fan of the theater, and often performed in community theater. She loved to read, being particularly fond of mysteries. She took an active interest in the affairs of the day, and remained interested in politics and current events until shortly before her death.
The funeral is Monday, November 19th from O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue with a Mass at 11:00 AM in Blessed Sacrament Church, 555 Pleasant Street. Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery. Calling hours are Sunday, November 18th from 4:00 until 7:00 PM in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the E.A.W.
