Obituary

JEVELI-Edmund S. of Boca Raton, FL, formally of East Boston and Winthrop, Oct 26, 2007. Beloved husband of the late Giacinda (Saggese) Jeveli. Born in East Boston on December 15, 1908. Devoted father of Elaine C. Jeveli and her husband Russell Kraus of Las Cruces, NM. Brother of Teddy Jeveli of Winthrop, and the late Lucia, Evelyn, Armand, and Louis (Lefty). Ed graduated from Tufts in 1934 with a degree in chemistry. He started MIT, but because of the depression, he took part time jobs with the Commonwealth of MA, and at the family restaurant of Jeveli’s in Day Square, East Boston, which was founded by his father in 1924, and is still open today as the oldest family owned restaurant in Boston. Ed worked there in many capacities. Ed then went back to work as an analytical chemist for 5 years for A.S. Campbell Co. He helped develop a plating process leading to pioneering the Watts Bath which led to the Harshaw process. During WWII, he developed a full automatic finishing process for Springfield Armory’s M-1 Garand rifle and a corrosion resistant zinc coating process for 40mm shells for the Pacific Theater. He then went on to work for the Frederick Gumm Co. in the electroplating field for 35 years in western New York and England. Ed married the “girl next door”, Giacinda Saggese, on her birthday, November 29, 1936, in St. John the Evangelist Church in Winthrop. Ed always credited her with his longevity and prosperity. The family would spend wonderful summer vacations fishing the lakes of New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Maine. In 1974, he retired to Boca Raton, raised orchids, and lived near the ocean for 33 years. Ed was real part of what Tom Brokaw called the Greatest Generation. A story that exemplifies Ed was after the war, the company that he worked for was going to lay off personnel. He convinced upper management to cut his pay, and others followed, resulting in no layoffs. I will miss you dad. A Funeral Mass will be held on November 29, 2007, at St John the Evangelist Church at 10am. Relatives and friends invited. Interment will be in Winthrop Cemetery (Belle Isle Section). Funeral arrangements were by the Maurice W. Kirby Funeral Home, WINTHROP. For guestbook, go to www.mauricekirbyfh.com.
