New Bedford - Arthur J. Jones, 87, of Dartmouth, passed away Saturday, November 3, 2007 at New Bedford Health Care Center. He was the husband of Marion I. (Ellis) Jones.
Born in Terre Haute, IN, son of the late Thomas and Anna (Yaeger) Jones, he lived in Dartmouth for most of his life. A United States Army veteran of WWII, he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his meritorious achievement near Hageneau, France on March 20, 1945. Prior to retirement, he was a truck driver for the former Harriet Transportation in New Bedford. He was a member of Smith Mills Congregational Church in Dartmouth, the Social Harmony Lodge A.F. & A.M. of Wareham, the V.F.W. Post 9059 of Dartmouth and was the past commander of American Legion Post 220 of Wareham and the Weeks - Plummer Post 307 of S. Dartmouth. Mr. Jones served on the Cemetery Board of Dartmouth for many years and also attended the Dartmouth Council on Aging. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, carpentry, fishing and welding.
Including his wife, he is survived by 4 daughters: Jacqueline Makowski of OH, Martha Brown of Warner, NH, Marilyn White (A.K.A. Sweet Image) of Jefferson, NH and Melinda Alves of UT; 5 sisters: Mary Bickel of IN, Merle Ellinger of IN, Gayla Crum of IN, Dorothy Price of FL and Eileen Jones of IN;14 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren;3 great great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Helen Jones and Leon Dube.
Funeral to which relatives and friends are invited will be Tuesday, November 6, 2007 at The Potter Funeral Home at 10:00 A.M.
Calling hours will be Monday 2 - 4 & 7 - 9 P.M.
Interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, New Bedford.
