Thomas S. "Nippy" Noponen of Worcester passed away on October 25, 2007, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. Tom is survived by his wife of 53 years, Frances K. (Cordella) Noponen; daughter, Barbara Demers of Worcester; grandson, James J. Demers and wife Wendy and great-grandson, Joshua J. Demers of Chicopee, MA; sisters, Esther Allen and husband Howie Allen of Worcester, Betty Lampi and husband Rauno Lampi of Arizona; an aunt, Jant Tryon and husband Bill Tryon of Connecticut; along with many nieces and nephews.
Tom was born in Worcester, son of Thomas and Bertha Noponen. He is predeceased by his brother, Donald Alden of Florida.
Tom graduated from Worcester Boys Trade School where he was a standout athlete. He played on both the football team and was an allstar pitcher on the baseball team.
After graduating Tom went on to pitch for the AAA baseball team The Ponies, in Ontario. He rounded out his baseball career after joing the US Army during the Korean War playing at Fort Benning, GA and Fort Hood, TX for two years. During Tom's baseball career he had 4 no hitters credited to his stats.
Tom worked 30 plus years as a glazier for Glass Contractors in Worcester until his retirement. His love of sports continued throughout his life as a talented and greatly respected golfer, playing at Wachusett Country Club and later at Green Hill Golf Course. For many years Tom carried a zero handicap and had captured 8 holes in one.
In accordance with Tom's wishes he will be cremated. A private memorial service will be held for family members at Greendale Peoples Church. Contributions may be made to The Rev. Ralph E.
