Obituary

John E. Atkinson, 82, of Mattapoisett died Sunday October 21, 2007.

Born in Lancaster, PA, the son of the late Clifford and Emma (Kilburn) Atkinson, he lived in Mattapoisett for most of his life.

Mr. Atkinson was formerly employed in public relations for Boston Edison. He later was a freelance writer for various local newspapers.

He was a graduate of Fairhaven High School, Class of 1943, and Northeastern University, Class of 1951 with a degree in Journalism.

John was a well-known personality in his beloved Mattapoisett. He enjoyed reading, writing, and socializing. He was a member of the Mattapoisett Historical Society.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army as a rifleman with the 69th Infantry participating in the Battles of the Rhineland and Central Europe.

Survivors include his nephews, Robert Davis of Westport and Raymond Davis of Vachon Island, Washington.

He was the brother of the late Gloria Botelho.

His Memorial Service will be held on Saturday at 11 AM at the Saunders-Dwyer Mattapoisett Home for Funerals, 50 County Rd., Route 6, Mattapoisett.
