Obituary

George S. Tavares, 83, of Raynham, died Saturday October 20, 2007 at Taunton Nursing Home after a long illness. He was the husband of Olivia (Martin) Tavares; they had been married for 60 years.

Born in Dartmouth, the son of the late Alfred and Sophia (Tavares) Tavares, he lived in New Bedford most of his life before moving to Raynham in 1998.

Mr. Tavares was formerly employed as a police officer for the New Bedford Police Department until his retirement.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps and participated in the Battles of Normandy, Northern France, the Rhineland, the Ardennes, and Central Europe.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Dennis Tavares and his wife Dianna of Bridgewater; a brother, Gilbert Tavares of Dartmouth; two granddaughters, Angela Tavares of Avon and Lauren Tavares-Mulhern of Bridgewater; two great-grandchildren, Abigail and James; and nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Rose Galego, Frances Estrella, Mary Simas, Antone, Alfred, John, Charles, and Manuel Tavares.

His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday at 9 AM in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Burial with military honors will follow in Rural Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Monday from 4-7 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to The Michael J.
