Obituary

Elizabeth (Devine) Kavanagh, 99 of Malden, formerly of Everett & Charlestown passed away at the Glen Ridge Nursing Care Center on October 6th , 2007. She was born in Somerville on October 16th, 1907 to her parents William and Ellen (O’Neill) Devine. At the age of nine upon the death of her mother, Elizabeth moved in with family in Andover and later moved to Presley St. in Malden. She always considered Malden to be her home. At the age of twelve she left school to care for her family. She also helped care for the sick and infirmed in the Malden area and was known to help physicians when a child was to be born at home. After becoming married she lived in Malden for a short time before moving to Everett and then to Charlestown. She spent 28 years in Charlestown raising her family and working as a Health Aid at Boston City Hospital. After retirement she moved back to Everett for 20 years and has spent the last 10 years in Malden. Elizabeth was a former member of the Ancient order of Hibernians in Malden, a parishioner at Immaculate Conception Parish in Malden and a lay member of the Order of St. Francis. She is the beloved wife of the late Thomas P. Kavanagh; the mother of Katherine Curran of Needham and her late husband Brendan and Thomas P. Kavanagh and his wife Lorraine of Revere; the grandmother of Brendan, Carmel, Karen, Douglas and Russell; the great grandmother of Elizabeth, David, Steven, Jessica, Christine, Andrew and John and the sister of the late Mary Kennedy, John Devine, Catherine Devine, Marguerite Breslin, Winifred Courtney, Helen Connell and William Devine. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews and many grandnieces and grandnephews. Funeral from the A.J. Breslin & Son Funeral Home, 610 Pleasant St., Malden at Medford line on Tuesday Oct. 9th at 9:30 AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at Immaculate Conception Church in Malden at 10:30 AM. Relatives & friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held at the funeral home on Monday from 4-8 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Resident Activity Fund at Glen Ridge Nursing Care Center, 120 Murray St., Medford, MA 02155.
