Obituary

Worcester—Shirley E. (Smith) Anderson, 96, died in her home on Monday, September 24, 2007. Her husband, J. Harry Anderson, died in 1968. She leaves her daughter, Jeanne R. (Anderson, Jette’) Gauthier, wife of Henry C. Gauthier of Worcester; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; two great, great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews throughout the New England area. A son, Cecil V. Anderson, predeceased her on October 7, 2004.

She was born on October 11, 1910 in Yarmouth, Maine, daughter of Annie (Thurlow) and Charles Smith, the seventh of ten children. All of her sisters and brothers have predeceased her. She lived in Mexico and Rumford, Maine where she attended grammar school and graduated from Mexico High School in 1930. Shirley came to Worcester with her husband, J. Harry Anderson in the early 1930’s. She was employed for many years at Zayre’s and also at Ames at Lincoln Plaza until Ames closed in 2002. She was adept at crafts and sewing and shared her knowledge with many customers.

Burial, after cremation, will be in The Old Swedish Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are private; there are no calling hours. Nordgren Memorial Chapel, 300 Lincoln Street is directing arrangements. For on-line condolences, please click below.
