João D. "Balalaca" Andrade, 77, of New Bedford died Sunday December 22, 2002 at Mediplex Rehabilitation Hospital in New Bedford. He was the husband of Elce V. (Lopes) Andrade.
Born in Brava, Cape Verde, the son of the late Thomas F. and Arminda (Oliveira) Andrade, he lived in New Bedford since 1962.
Mr. Andrade was formerly employed as a presser at Cliftex Clothing until his retirement in 1973.
Survivors include his wife; 9 sons Antonio Andrade of Mattapoisett, Augusto Andrade of New Hampshire, John Andrade, Joseph T. Andrade, N.E. Andrade, Paulo Andrade, Roberto Andrade, and Jose M. Andrade, all of New Bedford, Jose Gibau of Dartmouth; 7 daughters, Arminda Kantor of Sharon, Teresa Andrade and Fatima Andrade, both of New Bedford, Djudja Andrade of Pawtucket, RI, Helena Pavao of Reno, NV, Maria A. Reverdes of Florida, and Mimica Andrade of Cape Verde; 2 brothers, Alcides F. Andrade of New Bedford, and Jose F. Andrade of Brazil; 5 sisters, Margarida Macedo, Maria Barboza, Cizela Goncalves and Beatriz Castro, all of New Bedfrod, and Belaminda Vales of Florida; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Joao deDeus Andrade and Irisalva Rodriques. His Committal Service will be held on Thursday at 10 AM in St. John's Cemetery, Jacinto Street Entrance. At Mr. Andrade's request there will be no visiting hours and please do not send flowers.
