O’CONNELL-David J. of Winthrop, Sept 18, 2007, at the age of 84. Beloved husband of Ethel D. (Lawson) for 62 years of marriage. Devoted father of Ellen M. Watson and her husband Arthur of Foxboro, Janet L. O’Connell of Winthrop, Howard C. Lawson and his wife Anne of Stoughton, Kim O. Clauss and her husband Paul of Middletown, NJ, and David J. O’Connell and his wife Carolyn of Suffield, CT. Adored grandfather of Michelle A. Frey and her husband George, Kenneth A. Watson and his wife Jennifer, Jill C. Schade and her husband Matt, Christa, Stephanie, and Rebecca Lawson, Hillary and Paul Clauss, Hayley and Megan O’Connell. Great-Grandfather of Tim, Colleen, Jack, and Ben. Brother of the late Michael, Richard, and Leo O’Connell, Mary Clifford, Rita McCluskey, Dorothy Cootey, Alfreda Hesenius and Helen Osterhaut. Also survived by many dear nieces and nephews. Funeral from the Maurice W. Kirby Funeral Home 210 Winthrop St, WINTHROP, on Fri, Sept 21, at 9:15am. Funeral Mass in St John the Evangelist Church at 10am. Relatives and friends invited. Interment will be in Winthrop Cemetery, (Belle Isle Section) In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the USS Cassin Young Ass, 9 Ocean view St, Winthrop, MA, 02152 or the Winthrop Golf Club Scholarship Fund 453 Main St. Winthrop, MA, 02152. The youngest of 11 children, David was a graduate of East Boston High School-Class of 1942. He was a three sport athlete, where he excelled in baseball, and was captain of both his hockey and football teams. David was a WWII Navy veteran serving as a torpedo man on the USS Cassin Young (DD793), fighting in the Pacific theatre. He was the first president of the USS Cassin Young Ass. which is dedicated to the preservation of the USS Cassin Young which is now a Navy historic museum docked at the National Park located in the Charlestown Navy Yard. In 1945, he married is high school sweetheart, Ethel Lawson. David was a devoted father, grandfather and great-grandfather, together raising 5 children, 10 grandchildren, and 4 great-grand children. He was the former owner of the Mass Caterers Inc. of Malden, MA, and the Dandylion Restaurant located in Gov. Center, Boston, MA.
