TEWKSBURY: John W. Wynn, age 81, a resident of Tewksbury for over 40 years, retired Superintendent of the Tewksbury School Department, died Friday, September 14th, surrounded by his family, at the Kindred North Shore Hospital in Peabody, following a lengthy illness.
He was the beloved husband of Miriam (Mahoney) Wynn, with whom he celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary on June 16th.
Born in New Britain, CT on September 13, 1926, he was the son of the late Harold W. and Elizabeth (Conlon) Wynn.
Mr. Wynn was raised in Holyoke, Mass., attended Holyoke schools and graduated from Holyoke High School in 1944.
In 1948, he received his B.S. Degree in Biology from American International College and later earned a M.A. Degree in Education from Boston University.
Mr. Wynn began his career in education as a science teacher in Pittsfield, NH. He later served the community of Winthrop, MA as a Teacher, Junior High School Assistant Principal and as the Winthrop School Department Assistant Superintendent. Prior to his retirement, he served as the Superintendent of Tewksbury Schools from 1965 until 1991.
During his tenor, he was most proud of accomplishing the construction of the Loella F. Dewing School and the building additions and renovations to the Tewksbury Memorial High School, and the Heath Brook, North Street and Louise Davy Trahan Elementary Schools.
In addition, Mr. Wynn served on numerous Tewksbury committees including the John F. Ryan School Building Committee, the John W. Wynn School Building Committee Renovation Committee, which was dedicated in his honor on October 25, 1992 and the Town Finance Committee.
He was a member of several education associations including the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents, member and past president of the Merrimack Valley Association of School Superintendents, and founding director of the Massachusetts Education Center.
Mr. Wynn was a past president of the Tewksbury Rotary Club.
He was a communicant of St. Robert Bellarmine Church of Andover, where he served as a Eucharistic Minister, usher and volunteer at the annual church fair.
According to his family, he enjoyed playing golf, cooking, traveling, hosting dinner parties and spending time with his family, friends and grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Elizabeth A. Paglia and her husband Michael of Lowell; one son, Jeffrey J. Wynn and his wife Andrea of Bradford; three grandchildren, Ryan J., Erin M. and Sean J. Wynn all of Bradford; one brother, Richard P. Wynn of Colorado Springs, CO; two sisters-in-law, Peggy Donegan and Agnes Mahoney both of Tewksbury; also several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours Tuesday, Sept. 18th, 4 to 8 p.m., at the Farmer & Dee Funeral Home, 16 Lee St., Tewksbury. Funeral Wednesday, Sept. 19th, at 10 a.m., from the funeral home, followed by his Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. at St. Robert’s Church, 198 Haggett’s Pond Rd., Andover. Interment at St. Mary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the American Lung Association, 460 Totten Pond Rd., # 400, Waltham, MA 02451 are requested.
