Obituary

James Albert (Jim) Quinn, of 9 Oak St. Groton Long Point, formerly of Norwichtown passed away on September 11, 2007 at the age of 93.

He was born on April 27, 1914 to James and Anna Manning Quinn. He attended St. Mary’s School and graduated from Norwich Free Academy in 1933 where he was the first drum major.

On April 18, 1942 at Sacred Heart Church in Norwichtown he married Helen Koski Quinn and together they raised nine children.

He was an army veteran of WWII serving as a cartographer. He worked for 40 years as a photo engraver for the former Chambers and Storck Co. of Norwich. Upon his retirement in 1976, he and Helen moved to their summer home at Groton Long Point.

Jim loved music and was a drummer for much of his life. He was a drum major for the old Norwich Rotary Band, the NFA band, and a member of the Norwich Concert Band. Jim was also a founder and partner of the Brennan-Quinn orchestra. For many years he played at the former Morton House in Niantic.

Jim was active in the Community and especially his church. He was a past president of the Norwich Kiwanis Club and a volunteer at the Mystic Seaport where he was “Uncle Sam” every 4th of July for 25 years. He was president of the Holy Name Society and a lector at Sacred Heart Church, where he was instrumental in securing the bell for the Church tower. At St. Mary Mother of the Redeemer Church, he was a lector and a greeter for many years.

Jim is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Helen and his nine children: Michael (Evi), Kathleen Bellicchi (Eric), Patricia Clairwood (Richard), Elizabeth Popinchalk (Peter), Seumas (Jeanne), Timothy (MaryLou), Daniel (Maho), Christopher (CarolAnn), and Kevin (Laurie). He was “Dzadzi” to twenty one grandchildren and three great grandchildren. His Irish wit and gift of gab will be missed by all those who knew and loved him.

Jim's family will greet relatives and friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic on Sunday from 3-6pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be concelebrated at St. Mary Mother of the Redeemer Church, Groton Long Point Road, Groton on Monday at 10am. Burial in St. Mary's Cemetery, New London.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Fairview Resident's Fund c/o Fairview 235 Lestertown Road Groton or the Visiting Nurses Association of S.E.CT.
