LOWELL—Candida (Maldonado) Mercado, 68 years old, a resident of Lowell since 1960, died Thursday December 19th, at her home, after a battle with cancer. She was the wife of Victor M. Mercado, who survives her.
She was born in Comerio, Puerto Rico, on June 14, 1934, a daughter of the late Candido and Tomasa (Conception) Maldonado. She was educated in Puerto Rico.
Mrs. Mercado was the mother of eight, but was an adopted mother to an entire generation of local children.
Surviving her besides her husband are her seven children: Rachel Castro, of Fort Lauderdale, FL; Elizabeth Mercado, of Lowell; Lourdes I. Mercado, of Cleveland, OH; Victor M. Mercado, Jr., of Providence, RI; Jose Mercado, of Pepperell; Carlos M. Mercado, of Lowell; and Wilfredo Mercado, of Lowell; three brothers: Cruz M. Maldonado, Saturnino Maldonado and Carlos Maldonado, all of Lowell; two sisters: Lydia Maldonado and Teresa Maldonado, both of Lowell; sixteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was the mother of the late Juan Mercado, who died in 1991, and sister of the late Robert, Enrique, Francisca and Maximino Maldonado
Friends may call from 3 until 8 PM on Sunday, December 22nd, at the MAHONEY FUNERAL HOME, 187 Nesmith Street, (Rte. 38). Her Funeral Mass to be offered Monday morning, December 23rd, at 10 AM at NUESTRA SENORA del CARMEN CHURCH, Lowell. Burial in St. Patrick Cemetery,Lowell.
