Emily T. (Peters) Alves, 83, of New Bedford, died September 5, 2007 after a long illness. She was the mother of the late Patricia A. Alves, and the daughter of the late George and Kaffa (Dumas) Peters, all of New Bedford.
A lifelong resident of New Bedford, she worked for many years as a machine operator at Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in New Bedford.
A parishioner of Our Lady of Purgatory Maronite Catholic Church, Emily was a strong believer in her faith and was especially drawn to St. Jude. She loved birds and the beach, often taking a long bus ride when she was younger just to dip her toes in the ocean. She was especially proud of her big family and kept a large scrapbook of the accomplishments of her nieces and nephews.
She is survived by six sisters: Cecelia Atallah of Fairhaven, Ann Abraham, Octavia David, Louise Dupre, Maryann Chomak and Norma Thomas, all of New Bedford; and many nieces and nephews.
She was the sister of the late Rosemary Peters, RSM, Freda Thomas, Mary Barckett, and Theresa Coury.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, September 8, 2007 at 10 AM in Our Lady of Purgatory Church, 11 Franklin Street, New Bedford. Visiting hours are omitted. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be sent to Sacred Heart Home, 359 Summer Street, New Bedford, MA 02745.
