Obituary

Salem: Richard D. Jukins age 73 of Salem, died Friday, August 10, 2007 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers following a brief illness. He was the husband of Joan F. (McCormack) Jukins with whom he shared 48 years of marriage.
Born and raised in Lawrence, he was the son of the late Michael C. and Natalie (Surawski) Jukins. A graduate of Central Catholic High, he was a star hoop player and all around athlete who excelled in baseball, softball, volley ball and golf. He went on the play for the former Oxford College of Boston which he was then attending. Dick first worked as a carpenter-cabinet maker, a trade he learned from his grand-father and other family members. A veteran of the Korean Conflict, he served with the U.S. Coast Guard. In 1959, he married Joan and settled in Salem. In 1964 he joined the Salem Fire Department as a firefighter and retired in 1992. He was a member of Salem Firefighters Local 172.
Several years ago Dick took up oil painting and advanced very quickly in technique and composition. He was currently studying with Robert Gallowsky. He was a member of the Lafayette Associates and the Ste. Anne Parish of Salem.
In addition to his wife Joan, he is survived by a brother Leonard Jukins of Antrim, NH, 12 nieces and nephews, several god-children, grandnieces and grandnephews. He was predeceased by his nephew Daniel Jukins.
Relatives and friends are invited to his funeral on Tuesday, August 14, 2007 at 8 am from the Levesque Funeral Home, 163 Lafayette St., [Rt. 114 / 1-A] Salem, followed by his funeral mass in Ste. Anne Church, Jefferson Ave., Salem at 9 am. Visiting hours: Monday 3 to 7 pm. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the North Shore, 10 Elm St., Danvers, MA 01923.
