WORCESTER - Stephen G. Economos, 68, of Worcester, died Friday, August 3rd in his home. He leaves his wife of 43 years Jacqueline A. (Scott) Economos; his son, George S. and his wife, Rachel N. Economos of Worcester; his daughter, Christina D. Economos and her husband Barry S. Pailet of Concord; a sister, Anthoula Economos of CA; 5 grandchildren, Stephen G., Nicholas J., and Melina S. Economos and Luke T. and Alexis M. Pailet; and several nephews and nieces.
He was born in Lowell the son of George S. and Beatrice (Metropolis) Economos, both of Greece. In 1959 Mr. Economos founded and later co-owned with his son Economos Painting Company, Inc. He attended Clark University, served in the United States Navy, was a member of the Order of AHEPA, St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral, and a life member of the Tatnuck Club. Mr. “E’s” lifelong passion was giving his time to his community and assisting others, whether through 50 years of private coaching to softball pitchers, voluntarily coaching softball pitching at Boston College for over a decade, countless hours invested in the Jesse Burkett Little League and Westside Babe Ruth programs, as a Boy Scout Troop Leader at St. Spyridon, and as a Big Brother and contributor to many youth organizations including The Friendly House. He was presented with keys to the city for his services twice, in 1982 and 1991. "Papou” will be remembered as a mentor and friend to countless people of all ages.
The funeral is Tuesday, August 7th at 10:00 a.m. at St Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 102 Russell Street. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery.
