GILFORD
Viola M. Mitchell, 91, of 737 Gilford Ave. died Saturday, December 7, 2002 in her residence following an extended illness. She was born Swanton VT on October 29, 1911, the daughter of Carl J. and Julia (Hemenway) Horner.
She moved to the area from Lincoln NH in 1946 and has made her home with her daughter, Mary and her husband Herbert for the past 27 years.
Employed as a waitress for many years, she was affectionately known as “Ma” to her customers at Earl’s Diner, the Courthouse Diner and Dearborn’s Diner. She was the widow of Ernest F. Mitchell Sr., who died on Oct. 12, 1962. In addition, she was pre-deceased by a daughter, Eva M. Goupil on April 3, 1998 and also by two sisters and four brothers.
Family members include five daughters, Mary Heath of Gilford, Rose Mitchell of Dorchester, NH, Anna Belanger of Stonington , Conn., Sandra Tibbetts of Meredith and Donna Swain of Laconia; 24 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; 12 great great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
There are no calling hours. A funeral ceremony was held in the Simoneau & Lambert Funeral Home, 139 Church St. on Tuesday at 12:30 PM. Spring burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Community Health & Hospice, 780 N. Main St., Laconia NH 03246. Timothy C. Molan and David L. Furber were the funeral directors.
