Tewksbury - Blanchard D. “Trimmer” Newell, age 95, a former Boston harbor tug boat captain,
died Tuesday, July 17, following a long period of declining health. He was the husband of the late
Lena (Del Bene) Newell, who died in 1994, and previously the late Yolanda (Graziano) Newell,
who died in 1962.
He was born in Nova Scotia, on September 6, 1911, a son of the late Brenton and Veretta (Ross)
Newell, but had lived the greater part of his life in Tewksbury. He was a boat captain for the Boston Fuel Transportation Company until his retirement. He was a member of the Master Mates Pilots Association, and a member of the Tewksbury Golden Age Club.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Warren Layne of Tewksbury; a son and
daughter-in-law, Malcolm and Barbara (Strangman) Newell of Billerica; One brother Kenneth
Newell and one sister Edith Wickens both of Nova Scotia; ten grandchildren; and ten great
grandchildren.
He was also father of the late Marjorie McCaigue and brother of the late George Avrey Newell,
Randall, Francis, Carl, Wishart, Malcolm, and Marguarite, and Edwin Newell.
His Funeral Service was held Friday, July 20, in the First Baptist Church of
Wilmington, Wilmington. Burial followed in Oak Grove Cemetery,
Medford. Memorial contributions to the Salvation Army 150 Appleton St. Lowell, MA 01852 will be
appreciated.
