
OLD MYSTIC- Marian Evelyn Whitford Patterson, a life-long resident of Old Mystic, died July 8th at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Stafford Springs at the age of 95.
She was born in Old Mystic on August 19, 1911 the daughter of Urban C. and Phebe (Wheeler) Whitford. She graduated from Stonington High School and Bay Path Institute in Longmeadow, MA.
Marian's early jobs include interviewing for WPA and for applications for ration stamps during WW II. She later was bookkeeper for Denison Oil Company and was tax Collector/Assessor for Old Mystic Fire Department for many years, preparing tax bills on her typewriter.
In between Marian was a "stay-at-home" mom, a member of the PTA, a longtime member of the Old Mystic Methodist Church and the Old Mystic Methodist Golden Rule Class, and an avid gardener.
Never interested in even learning to drive a car, she nonetheless did learn to drive when her husband was hospitalized for a long period so that she would visit without inconveniencing friends or relatives. Once he was home she never drove again.
Her husband, Francis P. "Frank" Patterson, died in 1969. She is survived by her daughter Joyce P. Hall of Enfield; her grandchildren, Jonathan M. Hall, Penelope L. Sherry, Elizabeth A. Hall, and Stephanie Krilyno; her great-grandchildren Joshua M. Hall, Ryan M. Sherry, Keith Sherry, and Nicole E. Vatty; sister Eleanor Watson of Preston, brother Alvin Whitford of Old Mystic and sisters-in-law Sylvia Whitford and Irene Whitford. Besides her husband she is also predeceased by a daughter Dawn F. Krilyno, sisters Estella Martin and Gladys Whitford, brothers Ellery, Wilmer, and Clark Whitford.
Her family will greet relatives and friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic on Thursday from 10am-11:45am, immediately followed by a service at 12noon. Burial will be in Elm Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to the Old Mystic Methodist Church, PO Box 542, Old Mystic CT 06372 or to a charity of the donor's choice.
