Jennie R. (Gomes) Alves, 89, of New Bedford died Sunday June 10, 2007 at St. Luke's Hospital after a long illness. She was the wife of the late John Alves.
Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Albert and Josephine (Mendes) Gomes, she lived in New Bedford most of her life.
She was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Assumption Church.
Mrs. Alves was formerly employed as a nurse's aide at Sacred Heart Home and Hallmark Nursing Home.
Survivors include four children, Paul Alves and his wife Natalie, City Councillor Viola Pina, and Todd Gomes, all of New Bedford, and Dan Alves and his wife Cecelia of Wareham; a brother, Joseph Gomes and his wife Geraldine "Mummy" of New Bedford; a sister, Amelia Pina of New Bedford; seven grandchildren, Tyrone Pina, Craig Alves, Chad Pina, Kendallee Pires, Michelle Barboza, Louis Barboza, and Shane McNeil; ten great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She was the grandmother of the late Kenneth Pires, and the sister of the late Arthur Gomes, Albina Tavares, Lawrence Gomes, Tony Gomes, Ricky Gomes, Alice Gomes, and Lena Gomes.
Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday at 9 AM in Our Lady of the Assumption Church. Burial will follow in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Wareham.
