BEVERLY: Robert “Bob” F. O’Neil, 85, died Friday, June 8, 2007 in the North Shore Medical Center in Salem following a brief illness. He was the husband of Lucille I. (Roy) O’Neil.
Born in Fitchburg on November 19, 1921, he was the son of the late John H. and Elizabeth (Kelly) O’Neil. He was a graduate of St. Bernard’s High School in Fitchburg class of 1939. He had resided in Fitchburg for many years before moving to Beverly in 1971. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps on June 8, 1942 and served with the Marine Air Group #43 attached to the 3rd Marine Air Wing in the Pacific Theater of Operations. He was honorably discharged as a Master Technical Sergeant on February 8, 1946.
Prior to the war, Bob started working with the former New England Telephone and Telegraph Company in August of 1941. After returning from active duty, he resumed his career with the Verizon Company, where he worked all over New England for many years. He retired as a manager on July 5, 1983. He was a longtime communicant of St. Mary Star of the Sea Church
In addition to his wife of fifty-seven years, he is survived by a daughter, Kathleen Rosenfield of Beverly, two sons and daughters-in-law, Paul and Jan O’Neil of Holliston and Stephen and Nancy O’Neil of Hampton Beach, NH, three grandchildren, Mark Rosenfield, Michael O’Neil and Shannon O’Neil, a brother and sister-in-law, Mark and Deanne O’Neil of Nokomis, FL and several nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by two sisters, Martha Hagerty and Elizabeth Dooling and a brother, Paul O’Neil.
His funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday in St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, Beverly at 11 A.M. Visiting hours will be held on Monday in the Grondin Funeral Home, 376 Cabot Street, Beverly from 4 - 8 P.M. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, 253 Cabot St., Beverly, MA 01915. Interment will be held in the Central Cemetery, Beverly.
