Viriato A. Tavares, 78, of New Bedford died April 26, 2007 at Hathaway Manor after a long illness.
He was the husband of Auxilia (DaRosa) Tavares.
Born in Brava, Cape Verde, the son of the late André and Emilia (Pereira) Tavares, he lived in New Bedford since 1967.
Mr. Tavares was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Assumption Church.
He was a member of Bisca Tournament Club.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Napoleon Tavares of New Bedford; Aguinaldo Tavares and Olavo Tavares both of Cape Verde; a daughter, Mariazinha of Holland; a stepdaughter, Millie Barbosa of New Bedford; a stepson, John Fernandes of Florida; a brother, Aguinaldo Tavares of Brockton; a sister, Aurora DeMiranda of New Bedford; four grandchildren, Matilda,Viriato, Julia, and David Tavares; four step-grandchildren, Kristen and Alexis Barbosa, Shane and Joshua Fernandes; a nephew, John Tavares and his wife Edith of New Bedford; three nieces, Luisa Tavares and Julia Tavares, both of Brockton and Eunice Rosa, and her husband Manuel, of Cape Verde.
He was the father of the late Mercedes Tavares and the brother of the late Teofilo Tavares.
Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home For Funerals, 495 Park St. New Bedford Monday at 11 AM. Funeral Mass at Our Lady of the Assumption Church at 12 Noon. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery. Visiting hours Sunday, April 29th from 3-7 PM.
