Mary L. (Moriarty) Kuliesis, 85, formerly of Brockton, retired school teacher

BROCKTON – Mary L. (Moriarty) Kuliesis, April 14, 2007, 85 years, formerly of Brockton, wife of over 50 years, loving mother, and retired school teacher died Saturday morning. Born in Brockton to the late James and Sarah (Thompson) Moriarty, Mrs. Kuliesis was a 1939 graduate of Brockton High School and received her degree in Elementary Education from Bridgewater State College. Prior to raising her family she taught several years in the Brockton School system.

Mary grew up in the shadows of St. Edward’s Church and as an active parishioner/parent raised five children who graduated from St. Edward School. Her love for the parish continued when she accepted a teaching position which led to a 50+ year commitment to St. Edward School. Her 25 years of teaching allowed her to practice her faith in God while she helped over 700 third graders and their families strive to do their very best for the love of God. Her exemplary dedication to the ministry of teaching was an inspiration to many. In 1992, Mrs. Kuliesis retired from St. Edward School and she and her husband enjoyed many trips to Maine and travels to the Midwest. She looked forward to many long lunches with her long time friends, Martha Barnhart and Maureen Flaherty. While enjoying the comfort of a cat at her side, she continued her word puzzles and cross stitching until affected by poor vision and eventual blindness. The progression of Alzheimer’s led to needed assistance at Life Care in West Bridgewater and Blue Hills Alzheimer’s Center in Stoughton where she peacefully passed away. The family is deeply appreciative of the care and attention she was given by staff at both centers.
Mrs. Kuliesis was the wife of the late Walter V. Kuliesis and is survived by her five children: Walter F. and his wife the late Elizabeth of Arlington Heights, Mary C. and her husband Dr. Anthony Scalzo of St. Louis, Missouri, Thomas J. and his wife Anne of Brockton, James F. and his wife Pamela of Bridgewater and John J. and his wife Nancy of Indianapolis, Indiana; and grandchildren: Peter Kuliesis, John, James, and Catherine Scalzo, Kerri (Marc) Mangiacotti, Kevin (Kim) Kuliesis, and expected grandchild; and great grandchild, Savannah Kuliesis. Surviving also are her brother, Rev. Thomas W. Moriarty and Sister Catherine E. Brown and her late husband Fred and two nieces. She was preceded in death by her brother Francis Moriarty.
Her funeral will be from the Conley Funeral Home 138 Belmont Street, Brockton, Thursday at 8am followed by a funeral Mass in St. Edith Stein Parish/St. Edward Church at 9am. Burial in Calvary Cemetery, Brockton. Visiting Hours will be Wednesday from 4-8pm.
