Obituary

DRACUT - Charles Athanas, 87, a longtime resident of Dracut, died Friday April 13th at the Genesis Westford House in Westford. He was the husband of the late Frances (Hatzithkis) Athanas who died in 1995.

He was born in Lowell on November 28, 1919, and was the son of the late William and Anastasia (Argetes) Athanas. He was a graduate of Lowell High School, class of 1938.

Prior to his retirement in 1986, Mr. Athanas was employed as a receiver for Demoulas Market Basket in Salem, NH. Previous to that he was the owner and operator from 1948 until 1975 of the North Billerica Market in Billerica.

He enjoyed playing golf in his free time.

He was a member of the Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church in Lowell and the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Portsmouth, NH. He was also a member of the American Hellenic Progressive Education Association (AHPEA), and a member of the Dracut Mason's.

He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law William and Cheryl Athanas of Bedford, NH; two grandsons Christopher Athanas and his wife Nicole of Merrimack, NH, and Jonathan Athanas of Bedford, NH; three sisters Martha Stafford of FL, Rena Coravos and her husband Ted of Dracut, and Helen Sycovaris and her husband James of Guilford, NH; and several nieces and nephews.

He was also the brother of the late Arthur Athanas, Alex Athanas, and Stella Koulaheras.

Friends may call at the DRACUT FUNERAL HOME, 2159 Lakeview Avenue, DRACUT, on Wednesday from 9:30 until 10:30am followed by his Funeral Service at 11am at the Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, Lowell. Burial in Westlawn Cemetery, Lowell. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his name to the Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, Fr. John Sarantos Way, Lowell, MA 01854.
