OBITUARY
Loretta (Camozzi) Afanasiw, 73, of Brant Rock, a retired investigative auditor for the Internal Revenue Service and a resident of Brant Rock for more than 50 years died Tuesday April 10, 2007 following a long battle with cancer.
Mrs. Afanasiw worked for the I.R.S. for twelve years and her duties took her all over southeastern Massachusetts. Throughout her illustrious career she was based both in Hyannis and Brockton, and received numerous governmental accommodations and awards for her stellar performance. She retired 12 years ago.
Prior to joining the I.R.S., Mrs. Afanasiw spent several years simultaneously raising her children and finishing her college education, and she graduated Magna Cum Laude from Bentley College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting.
Mrs. Afanasiw was born in Boston. Her own parents died when she was a young girl. She was raised by a very close aunt and uncle in Mattapan, and graduated from Hyde Park High School in 1952. During the summers she worked as a cocktail waitress in Brant Rock, and it was here that she met her late husband-to-be, Paul Afanasiw. The two were married in Mattapan on September 26, 1959.
From that time on, Mrs. Afanasiw dedicated herself to her family. The mother of four sons, she was an ardent fan of their sports teams and attended countless football, hockey and baseball games. Her sons survive her.
When her husband fell ill in the early 1980s, Mrs. Afanasiw took the initiative to go back to school and help support her family financially. It was a decision ahead-of-its-time, and one that spoke volumes of her dedication and devotion to as well as her endless love for her family.
At home, during her free time Mrs. Afanasiw spent innumerable hours working in both her vegetable and flower gardens.
After her husband retired and prior to his own illness, Mr. and Mrs. Afanasiw made trips to California and Florida, and also went on a number of cruises together.
With her husband’s passing, Mrs. Afanasiw revealed her inner character and strength. She was extremely independent and relished making the local bingo circuit. She also recently found an interest in poker, and even made trips to Las Vegas, Atlantic City and the Connecticut casinos.
However, her most prized activity and main focus throughout her life was spending time with her family.
Mrs. Loretta Afanasiw is survived and celebrated by her four sons, John Afanasiw, James Afanasiw (both of Marshfield), Paul Afanasiw, Jr. (of Plymouth) and Peter Afanasiw (of Marshfield); and two sisters, Zina (Afanasiw) Sullivan (of Plymouth), and Luba (Afanasiw) Brillant (of Marshfield). She is also survived by her daughters-in-law, numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, grandchildren, a great-granddaughter, and countless friends.
