Obituary

WORCESTER-Evelyn (Pallas) Soter, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt died Good Friday, April 6th. She leaves her daughter, Penelope C. Wolosz wife of Eugene Wolosz; her son, Theodore E. Soter, all of Worcester; 2 sisters, Katherine Labovites of Worcester and Helen Viola of Yarmouthport; 1 brother, Chris G. Pallas of Rancho Mirage, CA; a grandson, David S. Farnell and his wife Laurence and a great-grandson, Maxime, all of Toronto; 3 godchildren, Joanne Isperduli of Worcester, George Tavlas of Athens, Greece and Dr. James Pialtos of Whitinsville, and many nieces and nephews. Her son, William M. predeceased her in December 2000 and her husband in December 2005.

She was born in Epirus, Greece on July 3, 1923. She came to Worcester at the age of 5 with her mother Cleopatra, to join her father George Pallas who had established their family business eventually known as the Boulevard Spa in Greendale. Evelyn graduated from Commerce High School in 1942. She served as a nurse’s aide during World War II. In 1965 she opened the Reading Lamp Bookstore adjacent to the Highlander Diner owned by her husband Angelo and her brother in law James Labovites. Evelyn was well known throughout the 1970’s and eighties as “the most congenial” employee of Commerce Bank until her retirement in 1990. She was a member of St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral and served on the boards of the Philoptochos Society, the Daughters of Penelope and the St. Spyridon Women’s Guild. Evelyn was an affectionate, gentle and compassionate lady whose legacy will continue through all who have known her.

The funeral is Tuesday, April 10th from O'CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Aveneue with a service at Noon in St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 102 Russell Street. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery. Calling hours are Monday, April 9th from 4:00 until 7:00 PM in the funeral home.
