Obituary

Mr. Darnell Joiner was born to the late Henry and Lola Barley Joiner on August 12, 1928 in Huntsville, Alabama and raised in the Pond Beat Community. He entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, March 27, 2007 at Huntsville Hospital.

In addition to his parents, Darnell was preceded in death by his Brother, John Luther and his beloved wife of 56 years, the former Doris Sharp. God blessed this union with one daughter, Patricia Ann.

Darnell gave his life to Christ at an early age and united with First Baptist Church. In early years, he was a member of the choir and later joined the Usher board where he served faithfully as Chief Usher for over 25 years. He was affectionately called “Chief” by many and was honored as Chief Emeritus upon his resignation due to health problems. He was also a member of the Adult Class #6.

Darnell was a strong, wise, dedicated and faithful servant who was always willing to give and share whatever he had. He knew the Lord and daily walked according to His word. He constantly offered words of wisdom and encouragement to those with whom he came in contact and one could always expect a “sermonette” when in Darnell's presence. Even in his final hours, his faith was strong and was continuously expressing love, and giving praise and thanks to God for all His blessings."

His professional affiliations include membership in AARP, the Fraternal Club of Huntsville, Inc. for over 40 Years, where he received numerous awards and a past member of Morning Star Lodge #50 for over 40 years. Several years ago, he was recognized as “Father of the Year” by his church family.

Darnell attended Madison County schools. In later years, his job required him to receive additional training at the Technical Training School in Norman, Oklahoma. After 24 years of service, he retired from the United States Postal Service where he was Chief Mechanic and Foreman Analyst. For many years, he was also a driver and Co-owner of the United Cab Company.

He leaves treasured memories with his loving and devoted daughter, Patricia and son-in-law, Walter Stewart; two granddaughters: Tameika Dorisa and Pamela Darnette; one great granddaughter, "Lil Sugar", Kaylin; two sisters-in-law: Kathleen Harris of Detroit, Michigan and Pansy Dunlap of Citrus Heights, California; one brother-in-law, Handy Sharp, Jr. of Oak Park, Michigan; an extended family of four step-grandsons and several step great grandchildren and many "adopted" children; as well as a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Visitation with the Joiner family will be held on Sunday evening at the Nelms Memorial Funeral Home Chapel.

Funeral Services for Mr. Joiner are Monday, April 2, 2007 at 12:00 Noon at First Missionary Baptist Church, with pastor, Dr. Julius Scruggs officiating. Interment to follow in Valhalla Memory Gardens. Mr. Joiner will be available for viewing at the church one hour prior to funeral time.
