Obituary

Gussie Mioma Smith "Granny" Thompson, 85, of Tifton, died Monday, April 2, 2007, at Tift Health Care. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 4, 2007, at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Chula. Rev. Larry Layfield will officiate with burial to follow in Mount Zion Baptist Church Cemetery. Grandchildren will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, April 3, 2007, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals.

Ms. Thompson was born on February 19, 1922 in Tifton and was the daughter of Lewis Smith and Adeline Lightfoot Smith, both deceased. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Croswell Alet "Boss" Thompson; two brothers; four sisters; and three granddaughters. She was a homemaker and cook at the Shack Cafe in Ty Ty for many years and then went on to work as an interpreter for the Agrirama for 16 years. She was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, where she was a pre-school Sunday School teacher for many years. Her love for small children earned her the name "Granny" from everyone - young and old. She was a lifelong resident of Tifton and was also past president of the WMU and a member of the choir of Mount Zion Baptist Church. She was the beloved mother of eight children, including five sons and four daughters-in-law, Bobby and Marie Thompson of Sumner, David and Veda Thompson of Jacksonville, Florida, Charles and Glyniss Thompson of Lakeland, Florida, Larry and Annette Thompson of Tifton, and Steve Thompson of Tifton; three daughters and sons-in-law, Dorothy "Dot" and Lowell Beard of Sycamore, Brenda and Bobby Gay of Camilla, and Ann and Royce Cromer of Sycamore. She is also survived and loved by 19 grandchildren and 35 great grandchildren.

Flowers will be accepted or memorial gifts may be made to the Mount Zion Baptist Church Building Fund.
