Madeline F. O’Keefe (Mackey)

TEWKSBURY - Madeline F. O’Keefe, age 82, a well known member of the Tewksbury
community, died Saturday afternoon, March 24, at Saints Medical Center in Lowell after a
lengthy illness. She was the wife of the late Ret. Major Timothy L. O’Keefe Jr, U.S. Army.
Mrs. O’Keefe was born in East Boston, on October 3, 1924, one of nine children of the late
Richard F. and Elizabeth F. (Meaney) Mackey. She was raised in East Boston and graduated
from East Boston High School. As an Army officer’s wife, she lived throughout the U.S.,
including a duty tour at Schofield Army Base in Oahu, Hawaii, where she proudly managed the
Commissioned Officer’s Club. The O’Keefe family settled in Tewksbury in 1968, where she
remained for the last 39 years.
Mrs. O’Keefe was an active member of St. William’s Parish community in Tewksbury.
She worked as a waitress at the Snack Shack Restaurant in Tewksbury, and later worked into her
late 70's in the Bakery Department at the Treble Cove Market Basket in Billerica.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Kevin M. O’Keefe and his wife Diane (Powers) of
Longwood, Fla.; twin daughters, Elizabeth A. “Betsy” (O’Keefe) Schomburg of South Boston,
and Kathleen A. Westaway and her husband Tewksbury Police, Det. Sgt. Robert Westaway of
Tewksbury; three brothers, Robert F. Mackey of Salem, MA, Richard F. Mackey of Tewksbury,
William F. Mackey and his wife Elizabeth “Betty” (Gallant) of Tewksbury; two sisters, Marjorie
E. DiManno and her husband Paul of So. Boston, Lorraine F. Fournier and her husband Richard
of Everett; a sister-in-law, Mary (Critch) Mackey of Chelsea; a brother-in-law, John Joyce of
Seminole, Fla.; eleven grandchildren, David M. O’Keefe of Haverhill, Brian J. O’Keefe of Dracut,
Kelly E. and Ryan W. Schomburg of So. Boston, Kerri L., Erin E., Katelin A., and Daniel R.
Westaway all of Tewksbury, Stephen, Sean, and Matthew Moore all of Fla; seven great
grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was also sister of the late Thomas F. Mackey, Rita F. Joyce, and Elizabeth T. Layne.
Her Funeral Mass was celebrated Wednesday, March 28, in St. William’s Church. Burial followed at Tewksbury Cemetery. Memorials to the E.N. Rogers V.A. Hospital, Patient Recreation Fund, 200 Springs Rd.,
