James H. Oliver, 69, of Hooksett died March 19, 2007 at Catholic Medical Center, Manchester after a brief illness.
Born in Bridgeport, CT on August 5, 1937, he was the son of James and Catherine (Hanley) Oliver. .
He served in the US Army from 1955 to 1958. He then earned a degree in criminal justice from John Jay College of CUNY.
Mr. Oliver worked at Sikorsky Aircraft as a helicopter mechanic for several years. He then began a career in law enforcement as a detective with the New York City Police Department (NYPD) in the bureau of special services where he was awarded the Honor Legion Medal. He later was police chief for the town of Hooksett for 21 years.
He was currently a 3rd. term state representative for Merrimack County District 9.
Mr. Oliver was Hooksett Citizen of the Year in 2000 and was a member of the Hooksett Mens Club for many years. He co-founded the Hooksett Emergency Relief Committee. He was a member of the NH Association of Chiefs of Police and the International Chiefs of Police Association.
He was also involved with the Hooksett Youth Athletic Association and was a former commander of the American Legion in Hooksett.
The family includes his wife, Sandra (Lail)(Sheidow) Oliver of Hooksett; two sons, James J. Oliver of Longmont, CO and Brian P. Oliver of Plymouth; three step sons, Jeffrey S. Sheidow of Charleston, SC, Michael R. Sheidow of Merrimack and Matthew R. Sheidow of Hooksett; 10 grandchildren; a sister, Joan Meyers of Shelton, CT and two nieces and one nephew.
A memorial service was held Saturday March 24, 2007 at the Congregational Church of Hooksett / United Church of Christ, 5 Veterans Dr., Hooksett. The Rev. David H. Richardson officiated.
