Obituary

Charles J. Kelley, 84, of New Bedford died Monday October 28, 2002 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston after a long illness. He was the husband of Mary A. (Manning) Kelley,and son of the late Michael and Margaret (Freitas) Kelley.

Mr. Kelley was born in New Bedford and had lived in New Bedford all of his life. He was graduate of Holy Family High School.

He was a communicant of St. Lawrence Church.

Mr. Kelley was formerly employed as a meter tester for the New Bedford Gas & Edison Light Company.

Mr. Kelley served in the U.S. Army during World War II with the 967th Antiaircraft Artillery Gun Battalion, participating in the battles and campaigns of Guadalcanal, the Northern Solomons, the Bismarck Archipelago and the Southern Philippines. He was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 Bronze Star and the Good Conduct medal.

He was a member of the Stetson Club, the Stetsonnaires, the Disabled American Veterans and the Catholic Guild for the Blind.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Michael C. Kelley and his wife Carole, of New Bedford; a daughter, Maureen Vieira and her husband Allen, of Rochester; and 5 grandchildren, Colleen Vieira, Michael Vieira, Charles Vieira, Ryan Kelley and Lucas Kelley.He was the brother of the late Clare F. Kelley.

Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New BedfordSaturday November 2, 2002 at 9 AM.Funeral Mass at St. Lawrence Church at 10 AM.Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours will be on Friday Novemebr 1, 2002 from 5-9 PM. Burial in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne will be private. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Mass. Eye & Ear Infirmary Development Office, 243 Charles St., Boston, MA 02114.
