Clarence Newby was born on January 22, 1927 in Harvest, Alabama and later moved to the small close knit community of Indian Creek. Clarence was affectionately known as “Ba Brother” and “Sam.” To the delight of his late parents, Mr. Leo Newby and Mrs. Annie Humphrey Newby, he was born the second of nine children and is preceded in death by his brother, John Newby and sister, Vergie Newby Harris. On Wednesday morning, November 22, 2006, Clarence peacefully departed his life.
He was educated in the Huntsville School System and began his career with the Army Air Force Exchange Service. He retired in 1985, after thirty-three (33) years of dedicated service. During his 33 years of dedicated service, he took no time off for small annoyances, such as the flu or other common illnesses. His exceptional work ethic achieved the distinct honor of having the highest number of accumulated sick leave hours of any employee at the time of his retirement.
He was also a faithful member of R. E. Nelms Elks Lodge #977, where he served as manager of services and received the Man of the Year Award for Outstanding Managerial Services in 1988.
In 1952, he was married to the former Agnes Carter, who preceded him in death. To this union three children were born. Clarence, Saadia and Xavier. He later marred Gail Carter in 1977 and into this union was born one son, Rashard.
A lifetime of wonderful memories will be cherished by his devoted wife, Gail; sons: Rashard (Kirby) Newby, Xavier (Frankie) Newby, both of Huntsville, Alabama; and Col. (Ret) Clarence (Vanessa) Newby of Gainesville, Virginia; daughter, Saadia (Lorenzo) Melonson of El Paso, Texas; his devoted brothers: Cartie (Bettye) Newby of Huntsville, Alabama, Billy (Carolyn) Newby of Flossmoor, Illinois; and his loving sisters: Istean (William) Hyter and Faye Newby of Los Angeles, California; Katherine Barnum of Northridge, California and Dorothy Rexter of Clayton, California; six grandchildren: Jeremy (Christie) Newby, Marlesia Newby and Bryan Newby, all of Gainesville, Virginia, Tyrone (Tanika) Newby of Tuscaloosa, Alabama; Lemuel Melonson of El Paso, Texas and Jada Newby of Huntsville, Alabama; three great grandchildren: Carson Newby and Jaythan Newby of Gainesville, Virginia and Kendall Newby of Tuscaloosa, Alabama; a loving and caring mother-in-law, Gloria Doss Evans of Toney, Alabama; four brothers-in-law: Henry Harris of Markham, Illinois, Willie (Carolyn) Doss Jr., Michael (Pat) Doss of Birmingham, Alabama and Roderick Doss of Athens, Alabama; four sisters-in-law: Diane Doss, Minister Princess (Pat) Brown of Birmingham, Alabama, Theresa Doss of Toney, Alabama and Carolyn Smith of Huntsville, Alabama; cherished nephew and nieces: Eric Newby, Yolanda Collick and Jackie Gurley, along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and loving life-long friends.
