Obituary

East Bridgewater - Barbara (West) Alexander, of East Bridgewater and Pocasset died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2007, at Caritas Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton after a lengthy illness. She was the wife of Robert B. Alexander for 58 years.

Born July 30, 1923, in Lynn, she was the daughter of the late Howard C. and Miriam L. (Cleversey) West.

She was a graduate of Winthrop High School, Thibodeau Business School, Faulkner Hospital School of Nursing and received a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Bridgewater State College in 1982.

A registered nurse for 50 years, Mrs. Alexander worked in many local hospitals and for 20 years, she was a high school nurse for the town of East Bridgewater. She was also the advisor for the Future Nurses Club of East Bridgewater High School.

During World War II, Mrs. Alexander was a cadet nurse.

She was an accomplished organist and had played at many churches, including Elmwood New Church in East Bridgewater for 40 years.

Mrs. Alexander was a Cub Scout leader and den mother, a member of International Order of Rainbow for Girls, and a member and past president of East Bridgewater Jr. Women’s Club.

In recent years, she was the accompanist, scheduler and director of the Senior Citizen singing group, the Melodians.

Mrs. Alexander was also a member and the president of the East Bridgewater Public Health Nursing Association.

She had been an East Bridgewater resident for the past 65 years, coming from Lynn and Fall River.

In addition to her husband Robert, she was also the mother of Robert B. Alexander Jr. of Bangor, Maine, Russell W. Alexander of Rochester and Lynne W. Barton of East Bridgewater; sister of the late Russell C. West; grandmother of Russell M. Alexander, Mark L. Alexander, Joy C. Keane, Sarah Gregory-Barton, Scott Gill-Alexander, Paul Barton, Robert Barton, Jeffrey Barton and Duncan Barton. Also survived by her great-grandchildren, Anden and Pierce Keane, and Brandon and Quentin Alexander.

Her funeral service will be held in Elmwood New Church, East Bridgewater, Friday at 10:30 am. Visiting hours in the Wales-Prophett Funeral Home, 35 Spring St., East Bridgewater, Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Burial in Central Cemetery, E. Bridgewater.
