William Robert Norris, 87, of Dartmouth died Wednesday February 7, 2007 suddenly at St. Luke's Hospital. He was the husband of Margaret E. (McHugh) Norris; they were married for 43 years.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late William and Ellen (Williams) Norris, he lived in Dartmouth since 1964.
He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in South Dartmouth.
Mr. Norris was formerly employed by the New Bedford School Department for forty years. During his career, he taught mathematics at Roosevelt Junior High School and New Bedford High School and special education at the Donaghy School. He had been the assistant principal of the Betsey B. Winslow School and the principal of the Mount Pleasant School for 15 years before his retirement in 1984.
He was a graduate of New Bedford High School and Moses Brown School in Providence. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Bridgewater State College and a Master of Science degree in Education from Boston University.
Mr. Norris was a member of the New Bedford Educators Association, the Retired Massachusetts Teachers Association, the National Educators Association, the Hawthorne Country Club, and the Wamsutta Club.
Survivors include his wife; his sister-in-law, Roseanne Barker of New Bedford; two nieces, Nancy Lawrence and her husband Jeffrey of New Bedford, and Erin McHugh of Dartmouth and New York City; two nephews, John F. Carney of Bolton, CT, and Hugh J. Carney and his wife Linda of Dartmouth; and several cousins.
His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 10 AM in St. Mary's Church, South Dartmouth. Burial will follow in South Dartmouth Cemetery.
