Funeral from the Conley Funeral Home 138 Belmont St. (Rte 123) Brockton Saturday at 8:30 am. Funeral Mass in Christ the King Parish/St. Colman Church at 9:30 am. Burial in St. Patrick Cemetery, Rockland. Visiting hours Friday 5-7 pm. In lieu of flowers donations in Dr. Sawyer’s name may be made to the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, Department of Food Science Scholarship Fund, UMass Amherst, Amherst, MA 01002.

Dr. F. Miles Sawyer 82 years of Pelham, Mass. died unexpectedly Sunday the Cooley-Dickenson Hospital in Northhampton after being stricken ill at his home. He was the husband for 58 years of Mary T. (O’Reilly) Sawyer. Dr. Sawyer was born and raised in Brockton a son of the late Frederick and Margaret (McSweeney) Sawyer. For the past 50 years he had been a resident of Pelham. Dr. Sawyer was a 1942 graduate of Brockton High School and received his B.S. from M.I.T. in 1948. He also earned his M.S. at the University of California at Berkley in 1951, and his PhD from the University of California at Davis in 1958.
During WWII Dr. Sawyer served in the US Army Air Corps as a B-17 Squadron Lead Pilot seeing combat in Italy. In 1972 he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel from the U.S. Air Force Reserve.
Dr. Sawyer had been a Professor of Food Science at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst 1957-1989. He retired as Emeritus Professor in 1989. Dr. Sawyer had been a member of the Institute of Food Technologists, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
For many years he summered at his home in Sandwich, Mass. which he and his wife graciously opened to many family and friends In his free time his hobbies included golf and salt water fishing.
In addition to his wife he is survived by many nieces and nephews
He was the brother of the late Edward Sawyer.
