Margaret Jeanette (Mathewson) Thayer, age 87, of 48 Fair Acres Lane, died Saturday afternoon at the Westerly Hospital where she had been a patient for the past week.
Margaret was born in Groton on April 29, 1915 the daughter of Harry A. and Annie (Gillon) Mathewson. A lifelong resident of Mystic, she attended local schools.
In earlier years, Margaret and her husband owned and operated a coffee shop in downtown Mystic. She later worked as a private duty housekeeper and cook.
Known for her kind and gentle manner, she enjoyed children and cooking. She also spent her time making ceramics and gardening.
She was married to George J. Thayer in Old Mystic on August 12, 1962.
In addition to her loving husband, Margaret leaves three sons, Albert Potter of Ledyard, Gilbert Potter of Mystic and Charles Potter of Westerly; two sisters, Marian Postel of Groton and Catherine Brayman of Westerly, 12 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a sister, three brothers, a daughter-in-law and a grandson.
A Graveside Funeral Service will be conducted at Elm Grove Cemetery, Route 27, Mystic on Thursday at 11am. The Rev. Merle E. Spring, Pastor Emeritus of Old Mystic Baptist Church, will officate. There are no visiting hours.
