Lewis Clay Underwood, 89, of Tifton, died Friday, December 22, 2006, at his residence. Graveside funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 23, 2006, in Oak Ridge Cemetery. Rev. Glenn Martin will officiate with burial to follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
Mr. Underwood was born on January 25, 1917 in Macon (Bibb County) and was the son of Wilbur H. Underwood, Sr. and Elizabeth Thomas Underwood, both deceased. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Wilbur H. Underwood, Jr.; and three infant daughters. He was retired as the first Director of Housing in Tifton and was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Tifton. He served 5 years and 3 months in the United States Air Force during World War II. He graduated from Emory Junior College in Oxford, Georgia; attended Emory University and the Atlanta Division of the University of Georgia.
Mr. Underwood is survived by one brother and sister-in-law, George and Adeline Underwood of Tifton; one sister-in-law, Floy Carnes Underwood of Atlanta; several nieces and nephews, Wilbur H. Underwood, III and his wife, Lois, of Perry, Stephen Carnes Underwood and his wife, Charlotte, of Lilburn, Lyn Taylor Trussel and her husband, Paul, of Jackson, Mississippi, George Sidney Underwood and his wife, Susan, of Roswell; and several great nieces and nephews, Caroline K. Stanford amd her husband, Claiborne of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and Ryan Keifer and his wife, Monica, of Tennessee.
