Obituary

LOWELL—Catherine W. “Nana” Hodgson, 97 years old, born October 23, 1904, a lifelong resident of the Wigginsville section of Lowell, died unexpectedly Wednesday morning October 2nd at her home. She was the wife of the late James A. Hodgson Sr. who died in May of 1979.

She was born in Lowell, a daughter of the late Dennis and Winnifred (Toohey) Walsh, and was a graduate of the Sacred Heart School.

She was employed at several area mills among them the Mass Mohair Plush and the Remington Arms during WWII.

Mrs. Hodgson was a communicant of the Sacred Heart Church and held membership in the Holy Rosary Society of that parish. She was also a member of AARP and the Lowell Golden Age Club. She was a former member of the Ladies Garment Workers’ Union. Catherine loved her family and enjoyed the many times they shared together and often recalled her wonderful memories.

Surviving her are a daughter and son-in-law: Kathleen C. and Richard J. Russell of Dracut, MA; a son and daughter-in-law: MSG, USAF, retired John M. and Wilma Hodgson, of Lakewood, CO; as well as eighteen grandchildren; twenty-six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.

She was the mother of the late James A. Hodgson, Jr., who died in 1983, grandmother of the late Thomas F. and Edward Hodgson, great-grandmother of the late Katherine M. Whitmore, and sister of the late John, Edward, Dennis, Michael, James and Winnifred Walsh, Elizabeth Rapp and Helen Lecourt.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM on Sunday, October 6th, at the MAHONEY FUNERAL HOME, 187 Nesmith Street, (Rte. 38). Her Funeral Mass to be offered Monday morning, October 7th, at 11 AM at the SACRED HEART CHURCH. Burial in the Lowell Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Tissue Bank International; 815 Park Avenue; Baltimore, MD 21210.
