Donald F. Olson, 71, died on Wednesday, December 13, 2006, at UMass Memorial Healthcare with his loving family by his side. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 44 years, Judith A. (Rice) Olson; two sons, Mark D. Olson and his wife, Mary, of Whitinsville, and David F. Olson and his wife, Pam, of Thompson, CT; six precious grandchildren, Courtney, Trevor, Tyler, Brendan, Haylee, and Erik; He also leaves nephews Paul Foster and his wife Cindy and John Foster and his wife Marge. In addition, he leaves many extended family and friends. His sister, Ruth E. Foster, preceded him in death.
A lifelong Worcester resident, Donald was born on Feb. 12, 1935, a son of Einar C. and Ellen M. (Morris) Olson. He was a graduate of Commerce High and Upsala College, E. Orange, NJ. He worked for the former Guaranty Bank & Trust Co. as an assistant branch manager and the Conifer Group as a Senior Staff Auditor, retiring in 1985 after 30 years of service. He was an active and vital member of Trinity Lutheran Church and served in the Stephen Ministries, the Trinity Men’s Club, and volunteered at the Lutheran Home. He was also a member of the Mendelssohn Singers, the Worcester County Light Opera, the Main South Community Development Corp., and was treasurer of United Negro College Fund. Don enjoyed his work as a volunteer caregiver to older people, scout leader, and eucharistic minister. He also enjoyed being at Cape Cod, spending time with his family and friends, hosting holiday parties, tree-trim parties, and parties in the “Barn.”
Funeral services will be held in the Nave of Trinity Lutheran Church on Monday, December 18, at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery at a later date. Calling hours will be held at NORDGREN MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 300 LINCOLN STREET on Sunday, Dec. 17, from 4-7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Endowment Fund of Trinity Lutheran Church, 73 Lancaster St., Worcester MA 01609.
