Obituary

SALEM - Alexander S. “Alex” Kowalski, 92, husband of Regina (Wrobleski) Kowalski, of Salem, died Tuesday evening, December, 12, 2006 at the Grosvenor Park Nursing Home, following a long illness.

Born in Salem on Oct. 27, 1914, he was the son of the late Stanley & Marcella (Wisniewski) Kowalski.

He attended Salem schools, Boston College and was a graduate of Suffolk University Law School in 1939.

He served in the Army in WWII, was a Staff Sergeant in the Signal Corps and served in both the European and Pacific Theaters.

After his discharge for the Army, he worked for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles for 32 years, where he started as an inspector, for a period of time served as Acting Registrar and retired in 1978 as director of field operations.

A lifelong resident of Salem, he was a communicant of the St. Thomas the Apostle Church for over 50 years, and was a member of the St. Thomas bowling league. He enjoyed golf and was a member of the Wenham Country Club for many years. He also enjoyed playing the organ.

Besides his wife, with whom he shared 60 years of marriage, he is survived by two sons, Paul Stephen of Salem, Philip Mark and his wife Susan of Gloucester, 2 grandchildren, Derek and Daniel, both of Gloucester, a sister-in-law, Stacia Wrobleski of Salem and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers, Felix, Max and Chester Kowalski, and sisters Effie Drankowski, Helen Jesuit, Alice Jones and Claire Drankowski.

His funeral service will be held Saturday, Dec. 16, 2006 at 10 am from the Full-Spychalski Funeral Home, 84 Washington Square East, by Salem Common, Salem, followed by a funeral Mass at 11 am at the St. Thomas The Apostle Church, on Route 114 at the Salem-Peabody line. Visiting hours are Friday, 4 to 7 pm. Relatives and friends respectfully invited. Burial is in St. Mary Cemetery, Salem.
