WORCESTER-Joseph O. Murphy, 84, of 39 First Street, died Monday, September 30th, in Hermitage Nursing Home. He leaves his wife Margaret P. “Peg” (Harvey) Murphy, 4 nephews; James L. Somers of West Haven, CT, Michael E. Somers of West Caldwell, NJ, Charles Somers of Miford, CT and Thomas F. Murphy, Jr., of Wellesley, and 6 nieces; Susan White of Northboro, Catherine Dembek of Roundup, MT, Maureen Connors of Northhampton, Theresa Ackler of Stratford, CT, Margaret-Ann O’Connor and Mary Ellen Stankus both of Worcester, and many grand nephews and nieces.
He was born in Worcester the son of James P. and Nellie R. (O’Flynn) Murphy. He was a graduate of Commerce High School. Mr. Murphy had worked for the Massachusetts Department of Public Works, Highway Department as a general construction inspector, for 20 years, he retired in 1963. He was the last family owner of O’Flynn’s Livery and Stables, located at Trumbell Square. Mr. Murphy was a member of St. Paul’s Cathedral Parish, and was a founding member and 1st president of it’s Cathedral Club, and a member of the Retired State, County and Municipal Employee’s Association.
The funeral will be Friday, October 4th, from O’Connor Brothers Funeral Home, 592 Park Avenue, with a Mass at 10:00 AM in St. Paul’s Cathedral, 15 Chatham Street. Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery. Calling hours will be Thursday, October 3rd from 4:00 until 6:00PM in the funeral home.
