TEWKSBURY - James W. O’Callaghan, age 60, a retired Engineer for greater Boston’s electric
utility company, died Monday, Dec. 4, at the University Hospital, the teaching hospital for the
University of Washington, in Seattle, WA. He had been courageously fighting non-Hodgkin’s
Lymphoma for the past nine months. He was the husband of Elaine M. (Murray) O’Callaghan,
with whom he had celebrated a 35th wedding anniversary this past Feb. 19th.
He was born in Somerville, on May 31, 1946, a son of Mildred (Corliss) O’Callaghan of
Tewksbury and the late James O’Callaghan. He moved to Tewksbury in his early years, and had
remained a resident throughout his life.
He graduated from Tewksbury Memorial High School, received an associates degree in Electrical
Engineering from Wentworth Institute in Boston, and later earned Bachelors and Masters
Degrees from Northeastern University.
He had worked for Commonwealth Electric, now called NSTAR, as an electrical engineer until
his retirement.
Mr. O’Callaghan was a lifelong communicant of St. William’s Church.
He and his wife are well known in the country line dance community, and he also served as a
goalie for the Tewksbury Masters Soccer League until last year.
Besides his wife and mother, he is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, James J.
O’Callaghan, M.D. and his wife Jane Yeh, M.D. of Seattle, WA, and Peter W. O’Callaghan of
Burlington, VT; two sisters and brothers-in-law , Joyce and William Gould of Pepperell and Edith
and Dennis Minton of Tewksbury, and several nieces and nephews.
He was also father of Robert O’Callaghan who died at birth.
His Funeral Mass was celebrated on Saturday, Dec. 9, in St. William’s Church, Tewksbury. Burial followed at
St. Mary's Cemetery, No. Tewksbury. Memorials to the Lymphoma &Leukemia Society, Donor Services, P.O. Box 4072,
Pittsfield, MA 01202 will be appreciated.
