Obituary

Charles Economos, 85, of New Bedford died Monday Novemebr 27, 2006 at home after a long illness. He was the husband of Claire D. (Messier) Economos.

Born in New Bedford, the son of the late George and Mary (Dube) Economos, he lived in New Bedford all of his life.

He was a communicant of Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish.

Mr. Economos was formerly employed by the New Bedford Public School System for 31 years before retiring as supervisor of building maintenance in 1986. He later was the proprietor of Nash Villa Barber Shop and worked at many area nursing homes as a barber.

During World War II, he served four years in the U.S. Army Transportation Corps before transferring to the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was a member of the American Legion Post 166 in Fairhaven.


He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, traveling, and working with his computer. He was the inventor and owner of a patent for a multi-window inserted staging system.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Cheryl Giovannini and Caryn Pedro, and her husband James, all of New Bedford; a brother, Alex Economos of New Bedford; a sister, Alice Reedy of New Bedford; six grandchildren, Jeffrey, Kristen, and Leigh Giovaninni, U.S. Navy Lt. Derek, Ryan, and Kevin Pedro; and three great-grandchildren.

He was the brother of the late James, John, and Peter Economos.

His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, November 30th at 8:45 AM in Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church. Burial will be private. Visiting hours will be on Wednesday, November 29th from 6-8 PM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford.
