Funeral from the J. Frank Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont Street, (Rte 123) Brockton Wednesday at 8am. Funeral Mass in St. Edward’s Church at 9am. Burial in Calvary Cemetery. Mr. Kelley died suddenly Sunday morning at the Brockton HospitalBorn and raised in Brockton, he had been a life long resident. He was the son of the late Daniel and Domicele M. (Machinas) Kelley. He attended Brockton schools and was a graduate of Brockton High School, Class of 1935. He was a member of YMLA (Young Men’s Lithuanian Association) football team and also played several other sports. He was a former chief of the Brockton Fire Department beginning his career at the Battle Street Fire station, and retired as Deputy Chief after 35 years. Mr. Kelley was the first Brockton firefighter to voluntarily enlist in WWII. During WWII he was a flight officer bombardier in the 531st Squadron of the US Air Force. Following the war he returned to the Brockton Fire Department and rose through the ranks obtaining the rank of Chief. As Chief he was responsible for instituting the 48 hour work week for the department. He retired in 1977 as Deputy Chief. After retiring he enjoyed extensive traveling and time spent with his grandchildren
He is survived by his wife of 60 years Helen I (Selila) Kelley. 1 son Lawrence Kelley of Brockton, 2 daughters Gail Bisio of Raynham, and Nancy Fogg of Brockton, 7 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews, He was the father of the late John Kelley Jr. Brother of the late William and Adolph Kelley, Josephine Moncevicz and Ruth Tully.
