CARMELA "ZIA" (GRANATELLI) ZONA, a Hingham resident for 45 years, died on Sunday, Nov. 5th at her home. She was 94. Mrs. Zona was born in Naso, Sicily and was raised and educated in Messina, Sicily. She was a teacher and administrator for many years at the Casa Regina Elena Orphanage in Messina. Mrs. Zona came to the United States and settled in Hingham in 1961. She was an active member of St. Paul's Church in Hingham and enjoyed knitting, cooking and her flower gardens.
Wife of the late John Zona, she was the step-mother of Catherine A. Ruffini of Hingham, Joseph G. Zona and his wife Rosemary of Hingham and Angelo A. Zona and his wife Carolyn of Hyannis. Also survived by her sister, Gabriella Graziano of Queens, NY, two sisters in Sicily, 11 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, Nov. 8th at 10 AM at St. Paul's Church, Hingham Square.
Friends may visit at the Downing Cottage Funeral Chapel, 21 Pond St., Hingham on Tuesday from 3-7 PM.
In Lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to St. Paul's Church, 147 North St., Hingham, MA 02043.
The interment will be in St. Paul's Cemetery, Hingham.
