Gerald Dennis “Denny” O’Callaghan-70, of Hudson, MA, died Thursday, November 2, 2006, at Bolton Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Marlborough, after a long illness.
He is survived by his wife of thirty five years, Mary “Gilda” (Ziane) O’Callaghan.
Born in Dorchester, MA, he was the son of the late William and Bridget (Sexton) O’Callaghan.
He served in the U.S. Army and Army Reserves. He was a lifetime member of the Hudson Amvets, Post 208, serving as Commander several times over the years. He was a former National Provost Honor Marshal, State Commander, Fourth Vice Commander, Third Vice Commander, Judge Advocate and Deputy of the Amvets. As a member of the National Saddest, “Sad Sacks”, an Amvet subsidiary fun and honor group that devoted their time to patients hospitalized in the various veterans hospitals, he dedicated many hours honoring and caring for the patients at the Bedford Hospital. He received multiple Amvet distinction Awards including Amvet of the Year.
He was a lifetime member and former officer of the Hudson Lodge of Elks, member and former President of the A.O.H., (Ancient Order of Hibernians) in Marlborough and served on the Hudson Bi-Centennial Committee.
He worked as an inspector for General Motors for twenty eight years and later worked in the Hudson School System as Head Janitor until retiring at age 65.
Besides his wife he is survived by his three sisters; Sheila and her husband Dr. William Leporti, Margaret and her husband John McCarthy of Roxbury, Mary Jackson of NH, his five brothers; William O’Callaghan and his wife Marge of Newburyport, Jack O’Callaghan and his wife Linda of Burlington, Danny O’Callaghan and his wife Maureen, Michael and his wife Peggie, both of Natick, Thomas and his wife Peggy of Rochester, NY, and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral mass will be celebrated Monday, November 6, 2006 at 9:00 a.m. in Saint Michaels Church 21 Manning street Hudson, MA. Calling hours will be held Sunday, November 5, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Tighe-Hamilton Funeral Home, Inc. 50 Central Street, Hudson, MA 01749. Burial will be in the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Winchendon, MA. The Hudson Amvets will be conducting their ritual at 7:00 p.m. and Hudson Elks at 6:00 p.m. Sunday evening
