TEWKSBURY - Mary E. (Gath) McCarthy, age 83, a member of a well known area family, diedSunday evening, Sept. 15, at the Tewksbury home of her son and daughter-in-law, after a lengthyillness. She was the wife of the late John E. McCarthy, who died in 1976.
She was born in Lowell, August 12, 1919, a daughter of the late Frederick and Elizabeth(Leonard) Gath. She moved to Tewksbury in her early childhood, where she remainedthroughout her life. For the last 20 years she had wintered in San Antonio, Fla.
She was a communicant of St. William’s Church, and was a former member of the St. William’s Sodality.
She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, John P. “Jack” McCarthy and his wife MaryJane (Donahue) McCarthy, and Harold W. McCarthy all of Tewksbury, a daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth M. and her husband Roland Gervais of Tewksbury, three brothers and four sisters-in-law, Frederick C. and his wife Louise (Marion) Gath of Deering, NH, Harold and his wifeEdith (Siegel) Gath of Tewksbury, Russell and his wife Lynn (O’Brien) Gath of Tewksbury, andJeannette (Garrigan) Gath of Tewksbury, one sister, Alice Pollinger of Lowell, 13 grandchildren,Theresa Walsh, Peter McCarthy, John Gervais, and Robert Gervais all of Tewksbury, Lisa Mellenof Nashua, NH, Paula Robson of Londonderry, NH, Lynda LeClair of Tyngsboro, Cisa Mulliganof Stratford, NH, Chuck McCarthy of Guilford, NH, James Gervais of Hillsboro, NH, JudithSpengler of Lowell, William McCarthy of Billerica, Kelly McCarthy of Calif., and 25 greatgrandchildren.
She was also sister of the late Leonard Gath, William “Happy” Gath, Charles Gath, AnnaPollinger, and dear friend and companion of the late Russell G. Caswell.
Her funeral was Thursday, Sept. 19, in St. William’s Church. Interment was in Tewksbury Cemetery.
