Obituary

Shirley (Jackson) Oates, 63, of Groton went home with the Lord on Thursday, October 19, 2006 at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in New London.

Mrs. Oates was born in New London on August 20, 1943 to the Late William and Julia (Sebastian) Jackson.

A longtime resident of Groton, she was employed by Garfield Belt. She was a member of the Eastern Pequot Indian Tribe where she held the title of Elder. Mrs. Oates was also a member of St. John’s Church in Groton. She enjoyed baking with her specialty being “7-up cake.” She was loved by many.

She is survived by her husband Robert Oates of North Carolina, daughter Christine Bryan and son-in-law Harold Bryan of Groton, daughter Sherri Peake of Goldsboro, NC, two sons Ricco Stoute and Nacoma Jackson both of New London, two grandchildren Ishmael Bryan of Groton and Latifah Manley of Goldsboro, NC, and a host of nieces and nephews. She is also predeceased by two sisters, Betty Fletcher and Annabel Jackson.

Her family will greet relatives and friends at St. John's Church, Shenecosset Rd, Groton on Tuesday from 10am-11:45am, followed by a Homegoing Service at 12noon. Burial will follow at Elm Grove Cemetery.
