Norman H. Phillips, 84, of Norton died on Thursday September 28, 2006 at the Life Care Center in Attleboro.
Born in Attleboro, MA on November 8, 1921 he was the third of four sons of the late Frederick A. and Mary A. (Stewart) Phillips.
Norman was a highly decorated WWII veteran serving with the 12th Air Force in the Mediterranean Theater of operations from 1943 to 1945 as a bombardier/navigator on A-20 attack planes. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air medal with three Oak leaf Clusters during his 56 missions. While overseas, he met twice with his brother Dwight of the US Navy in Rome, Anzio and later in Southern France.
He attended Norton schools and was a 1956 graduate of Boston University. Norman worked with Sears Roebuck, Pratt & Whitney Aircraft, Texas Instruments and retired from the State of Massachusetts as a Personnel Manager at the Wrentham State School. Norman was also a vice president for the Southeastern District of the Massachusetts Employees Union.
During his lifetime Norman had a great respect for people with disabilities. He quietly protected them and transported them to health care services. Norman also sheltered domestic animals and arranged for their care. He built upon his own health care by regular attendance at the Attleboro YMCA. He had resided at the Phillips homestead on North Worcester St. for 46 years and had also lived in Boston.
He was the brother of Frederick Stanley Phillips and his wife Nancy E. Phillips of Southport, Conn. and the late Dwight I. Phillips and the late Stewart A. Phillips. Also surviving are his niece Linda Lee Magovern of Foxboro and his nephew Tyler Phillips of Pinellas Park, Florida
Graveside funeral services, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Monday October 2nd at 1:00 P.M. at the Norton Center Cemetery, Pine St., Norton. Burial will follow
